Photo Essay of Nepal’s Reconstruction Published

The SSHRC Partnership Development Grant project, led by SPPGA Professors Sara Shneiderman and Philippe Le Billon, is excited to share a few recent updates to the project website: ‘Expertise, Labour, and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction: Construction, Finance, and Law as Domains of Social Transformation’.

A newly published Photo Essay, compiled by members of their research partner institution Social Science Baha,  includes images that were taken while conducting the first stage of fieldwork in the spring of 2018, and gives a brief overview of the experiences of community members following the earthquakes of 2015 in three regions of Nepal. Although it is not meant to be a comprehensive summary of all issues related to this project, it provides one possible pathway for understanding the complexities and contradictions present in Nepal’s ongoing reconstruction.

The partnership team also met in Kathmandu on July 23-24, 2018 for their second international workshop to formally kick off the second year of the partnership grant with attendees from Canada, Denmark, Nepal, and the United States. The team also participated in a series of research seminars hosted by Social Science Baha, and concluded the week with presentations by numerous members at the Annual Kathmandu Conference on Nepal & The Himalaya.

As the second phase of fieldwork in Nepal is currently underway, the team will be sharing more information regarding publications and upcoming conferences and workshops soon. In the meantime, please send all questions and comments to nepal.reconstruction@ubc.ca.
